Chapter 30

“The stegos are still asleep…”

“Shhhh,” Vann said, raising his hand.

“What?”

“We’re just reaching the edge of the danger zone. Twenty thousand klicks and we’re home free. If we can quietly slip through unnoticed, everything will be perfectly fine, and we’ll be stinking rich.”

“Is there any particular reason why the engines are off?”

“Just coasting through, little buddy,” Vann said. “I aimed us directly at the secondary system gate, taking into account the systems’ courses, planetary orbits, those major gravity wells, and the galactic spin, in order to thread the needle unseen. We burned hard just before entering into the other system to build up the momentum we need, and we’re just going to slip through like a leaf in a stream.”

Ripp craned his neck, looking at the readouts on the auxiliary console. “And what exactly were you planning to do when we got to the asteroid belt at the edge of the system or the debris field surrounding the gate?”

“You worry too much, little buddy,” Vann whispered. “The universe has its ways of smoothing out situations for the better. Just trust me on this.”

Placing the tips of his fingers together, Vann closed his eyes and began humming at a low tone. “Connect to your higher existence, little buddy. Be at peace with yourself, your existence, and the universe in order to achieve the perfect frequency and become one with the universe.”

“Have you been licking the stegos?”

“Nope,” Vann said, shaking his head. “It just finally hit me, is all, and I realized exactly what Madam Toni has been trying to tell me all of these years.”

“What? That you were dropped on your head as a baby?”

Vann cracked open one eye and glared back at Ripp. “I’m not going to let your negativity break my connection to the great beyond. I am part of the great mystery. I matter. I am, therefore, I exist. I am the feather in the storm. I am one with the universe.”

Red warning lights flashed across the cockpit.

“You’d better pull your head out of your ass before we’re one with a rock,” Ripp said as he slid into the copilot’s seat. “Why aren’t the alarms going off?”

“I disabled them,” Vann whispered matter-of-factly.

“Why?”

“If we’re quiet, they won’t hear us sneaking through the system, so I disabled the alarms.”

Ripp looked over at Vann and shook his head. “Exactly how many times has the universe drop-kicked you in the head?”

Vann took another deep breath and continued to hum.

“Vann,” Ripp said as he strapped into the seat. “You might want to slide back to the mortal plane and reconnect with your physical form before it gets destroyed. There’s a massive rock directly ahead and coming up quick.”

“There’s nothing to fear, little buddy. The universe will provide,” Vann said then hummed.

“Yup, he’s been licking the stegos,” Ripp said as he powered up the navigation computer. “Would you look at that, Vann. The universe found a way.”

Vann hummed louder.

“Transferring manual control,” Ripp said as he powered up the maneuvering thrusters. “Main engines online.
